Mikhail Podolak, adviser to the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, confirmed today, Thursday, that the counterattack against Russian troops began a few days ago and continues.
Podolyak, in an interview with the Italian channel Rai, said that the counter-offensive began a few days ago, and the fighting is going on along 1,500 kilometers of the border.
He made it clear that Ukraine would not use Western weapons on the territory of the Russian Federation, but would use these weapons against Russians to liberate Crimea and Donbass.
He added: “We do not want to strike on Russian territory, we will use weapons provided by the West to destroy Russian positions in the territories occupied by Moscow, including Donbass and Crimea.”
Take control of Bahmut
Podolak’s statements came just days after the Wagner Group announced their control of the town of Bakhmut after months of heavy fighting.
The operation began when the Russian army ran into difficulties in the Bakhmut region, losing what the Ukrainians say 20 square kilometers north and south of the city.
This also happened after Monday and Tuesday incursions by militants from Ukraine into the Russian border region of Belgorod, and it took Moscow more than a day to repel them, which also sheds light on the difficulties faced by its armed forces.
36 drones
Ukraine said on Thursday it shot down a total of 36 Iranian-made drones launched by Russia overnight. The attacks likely targeted vital infrastructure and military installations, she said.
Notably, Moscow launched a military operation in Ukraine last February and has been sending waves of drones to attack targets in Ukraine since October.
Although drones are slow, they are cheaper and more disposable than advanced missiles.
